5 More Plant-Based Myths, Busted
In a previous post, we discussed some common plant-based myths and whether they were true or not. Here are 5 more to keep you informed!

Myth 6: Plant production is ethically better
Mostly, yes. A plant-based diet generally has a lower environmental impact than an omnivorous or meat diet. Plant foods use less land and produce fewer carbon emissions, especially compared to factory-farmed meat.
However, some crops, like avocados, almonds, and soybeans, can harm the environment by depleting soil and using excessive water when grown in monocultures. Despite this, most plant production remains a more sustainable choice overall.
While a key focus of plant-based diets is avoiding animal suffering, some plant-based products still have ethical issues. For example, vegan cheese and chocolate production is often linked to poor working conditions and low wages.

Myth 7: Plant-based diets are unsuitable for children
A well-planned plant diet can be healthy for everyone, including children. In fact, a study from University College London found that vegan children usually have lower "bad" cholesterol than those who eat meat. The catch? They are also 3-4 cm shorter and have 4-6% lower bone density, likely due to less calcium in their diet. These issues can be offset with the introduction of plant milk that has been fortified by calcium.

Myth 8: Humans are designed to only eat meat
Humans are unique in that we are able to digest both plant and animal matter. For most other living beings, it’s one or the other.
When we’re talking about carnivores, think of cats. Their bodies are not made to digest plant matter as easily as we do, if any at all. If you have tried putting your cat on a plant diet, chances are you will find them going back to hunting small prey.
Humans have been omnivores since the dawn of time. In fact, our earliest ancestors relied on fruit from trees and meat from small animals.
Our anatomy also differs from typical carnivores. We lack sharp claws and teeth designed for hunting, suggesting we are better suited for a diet that includes plenty of plant foods.

Myth 9: It’s hard to feel energized on a plant-based diet
People often believe that a plant-based diet doesn’t provide enough nutrients or is too limited. But like any diet, it all comes down to proper planning. If not well prepared, a plant-based diet can leave you feeling tired or hungry.
Some essential tips would be preparing starchy foods like potatoes, carrots and rice which have good carbohydrate content. As mentioned earlier, involving plant proteins like wheat, tempeh and tofu are also crucial to keeping your body energized.

Myth 10: Pregnant Women can’t go plant-based
Many worry that a plant-based diet isn’t safe for pregnant women or children, but this is a misconception.
It is true that pregnancy requires extra nutrients, no matter the diet. NHS asserts that a proper plant-based diet can provide everything needed for both mother and baby, with special attention to iron and B12.
As stated earlier, raising children on a plant-based diet is also possible. The NHS also states that as long as they get all necessary nutrients, kids can grow up healthy on a plant-based diet. As usual, it is important to get input from nutritionists or doctors.
